Douglas Houzen Pinder, watercolour of Bedouins, in Suez Desert, near Cairo, Egypt.

Pinder (1886-1949) quit as an architect's apprentice in 1901 to become a full time artist.

He was sponsored to go to Egypt in 1919 to paint desert scenes from the military station at Base Said after being released from jail.

The trip was organised after he was sentenced to two years hard labour in Wormwood Scrubs for refusing to fight in World War I, as a conscientious objector.

Pinder spent most of his life living and working in Newquay, Cornwall. He favourite subjects were seascapes, moorland and desert scenes. He travelled on a pushbike with a bag of brushes fixed to his handlebars.

He died towards the end of 1949 at the age of 63.

Also included with this purchase is information about The Chalk Stream Collection, a certificate of authenticity, and a short biography of Douglas Houzen Pinder.
