Friedrich Schroeder-Sonnenstern (1892-1982) – The Moon Archer.
Poster Print of international importance – (code SN10-391).
German painter and graphic artist was one of the most important purveyors of the Art Brut and the Outsider Art.
Friedrich Schröder was born in 1892 in East Prussia, and escaped to Berlin in 1919 after leaving the army.
He occupied himself with occultism, divination and healing magnetism, and founded a small sect.
He became passionate about inequality and poverty and is known to have helped distribute bread to homeless and poor children in Berlin.
He cultivated the name Sun Star (Sonnenstern) while earning money as a supposed "quack" doctor who promoted "natural health". His pursuit of alternative medicine was believed to be partly based on his childhood experiences with crime, reform schools and mental health. His experiences as a child contributed to his lifelong hatred of authority
He was encouraged to draw by the painter Hans Ralf, and became prolific from about 1949 following spells in prison and a labour camp during World War II. He developed a unique style characterised by sexual symbols and themes in pencil. He favoured colour crayons from 1952.
He was considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century at the Surrealist exposition in Paris in 1959, but his popularity internationally eventually faded.
He hosted solo exhibitions from 1961 to 1982 all over Germany.
